A laptop that gets hot enough to make your hands uncomfortable is not just annoying. Heat can slow your work, cause sudden shutdowns, shorten battery life, and eventually damage internal components. Knowing how to fix laptop overheating starts with figuring out whether you have a simple airflow issue or a hardware problem that needs proper repair.

Some warmth is normal, especially when gaming, editing video, joining long video calls, or charging. The concern starts when the fan is constantly loud, the bottom gets extremely hot during light use, apps freeze, the screen goes black, or the laptop shuts off without warning.

Start by ruling out blocked airflow

Most laptops pull cool air in through vents on the bottom or sides and push warm air out through an exhaust vent. If those openings are covered, the machine has nowhere to send heat.

Listen to the fan and watch for warning signs

Shut the laptop down if you notice any of these signs:
